Immerse yourself in the adventure of the Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi, a masterpiece by Pierre Paul Riquet, connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a top tourist attraction! There are 63 locks along its entire length, and it's beautiful everywhere you go. Relax beside the water, admiring the colours of nature on the banks of the canal.

Since the days of the Roman Empire, people have dreamed of a canal to connect the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. Many French kings considered the project, but it always seemed too risky. It was a complicated job, and pirates at sea were a major hazard — plus, the Kingdom of Spain levied taxes on the Strait of Gibraltar!

It wasn't until the 17th century, when King Louis XIV sat on the throne, that the canal finally came to life. Engineering genius Pierre-Paul Riquet designed the canal, which took fifteen years to complete. This pioneering masterpiece is Europe's oldest canal still in operation, and it continues to impress engineers and casual fans around the world.

During your camping trip, learn more about the Canal du Midi. Check out the most important locks, like the Round Lock of Agde or the Nine Locks of Fonseranes.
