Well worth a visit Nearby Camping Le Martinet Rouge Occitanie
In an enchanting setting, 20 minutes from Carcassonne and 2 km from your Camping Le Martinet Rouge, the Moulin à Papier de Brousses invites you to enjoy a unique experience: discover the secrets and the magic of handmade paper. The one-hour guided tours bring the papermaking history of the village of Brousses-et-Villaret to life, taking you back in time to the end of the 17th century. We recommend the workshops, which can be enjoyed by children as young as 4 years old, in order to enjoy a traditional local activity as a family. After the visit, you can even make your own sheets of paper! Nestled amid unspoiled nature in the Montagne Noire, the Paper Mill also offers its very own botanical trail. Several marked hikes start from the Paper Mill, allowing you to choose whether to climb over rocks or take the new footbridge across the river. From these trails, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Pyrenees. More than just a visit or a walk, it's a unique experience in a bucolic setting that is sure to be an unforgettable highlight of your stay!
Something different
Treat yourself to a dizzying walk over 70 m above the ground by taking the Mazamet footbridge. Since 2018, a Himalayan footbridge, unique in Occitania, has offered a 140 m long crossing above the Arnette gorges and an exceptional view of the valley. Thrills are guaranteed! The footbridge will lead you to two marked trails where you can discover the region’s historical and natural heritage. The trails offer access to the small medieval paradise of Hautpoul, a picturesque village in the Montagne Noire. Don’t hesitate to combine this adventure with a visit to the House of Wood and Toys, an original museum that will take you on a delightful journey from the forest to the tree, from the tree to the wood and from the wood to the toy! This interactive experience includes workshops for children and adults, a games room and a shop offering French artisan products.
Don’t miss
Discover the Medieval City of Carcassonne, a true emblem of Cathar Country. The Medieval City has 52 towers and two concentric enclosures with a total of 3 km of ramparts! Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, it is the largest medieval fortress in Europe. Open the doors to 2,500 years of history, and let yourself be carried away in time! A large part of the City is free to visit, open day and night.
Walking/cycling route
The ETP association, which stands for Environment, Territory and Landscape, is made up entirely of local volunteers. This organisation has invested a lot in the hiking trails you can follow, starting at the campsite. On foot or by bike, you will cross forests, vineyards and the picturesque villages of Fraisse Cabardès, Fontiers Cabardès, Aragon, Villaret, etc. A walk around the lake of Saint-Denis with its waterfall and its picnic area is also a very good idea. If you’re feeling particularly motivated, you can walk through the Montagne Noire forest to reach the Prise d'Alzeau, where you will discover the Rigole. This 25 km canal is an exceptional technical feat, dreamed up by Pierre Paul Riquet in the 17th century. Starting here, its waters go on to supply the incredible Canal du Midi!
Driving route
We recommend a varied circuit to enjoy a day packed with discoveries among the many treasures of the Aude. Start with a historical and cultural activity by visiting the Four Castles of Lastours, an exceptional archaeological site, which includes 4 Cathar castles dominating the village of Lastours. You should allow 2 to 3 hours for this site visit, which includes a hike with magnificent panoramic views. Next, head to the Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine, a place that is well worth taking a detour for! With a depth of 250 m, this giant underground chasm offers a subterranean adventure. You’re sure to feel a shiver down your spine as you stand on the glass balcony, gazing down into a void of 200 m beneath your feet. It makes no difference whether you visit in the morning or the afternoon, as the temperature is a constant 14° all year round! Do you like strolling through a typical Aude village? Discover Montolieu, the village of Books and the Arts. The narrow streets are all lined with booksellers and artists who display their works, including painting, sculpture and other crafts. Make a last stop at the factory, an unusual cultural centre and our favourite wine shop, the Cave des Oliviers. Adrian will be delighted to offer you a tasting of the best Aude wines.
