Visit Roman Nîmes

Thanks to its 2,000 years of classical history, some people refer to the city of Nîmes as "French Rome". As you walk the streets, marvelling at the wonders of Arènes de Nîmes, Maison Carrée and Tour Magne, you'll feel like you've stepped back into the days of gladiators and emperors. There's more to this city than its ancient past, though. Check out all the great shops, fabulous restaurants and lively bars. Once you do, you'll then know why Nîmes has become such a popular destination today.

As you walk through Nîmes, you'll be transported back in time...all the way back to the 2nd century BC, in fact. This was when Emperor Augustus built mighty monuments around this city, symbolising the power of Rome in Gaul. Many of these structures are still standing over two millennia later. Take a look at the Nîmes Amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the entire Roman world. There's also the Maison Carrée, which was the economic hub of the ancient city of Nemausus. Your walk through the Roman city of Nîmes will also take you to ancient temples, towers and more. Can't get enough of that classical magic? Top it off with a visit to the Roman Museum!

Road trip to the Pont du Gard

Want to see more of the south of France? Then you're in luck! The city of Nîmes is just bursting with things to see and do. In particular, we recommend you check out the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Cévennes, the Pont du Gard, and the abbey church of Saint-Gilles-du-Gard. Got time for more? Try the villages of Vénénobres and Sommières, the quarries of Junas, the Oppidum of Nages and the castle of Villevieille.

From the Cévennes to the Camargue via the Pont du Gard, this area will enchant you with its ever-changing landscapes. Set out from your campsite by car, and you'll soon be in paradise: all around you are fields, olive trees and vineyards. Go deeper into the countryside to explore the rivers and gorges, and don't forget the beaches and lagoons!

No matter where your road trip takes you, make sure you stop at the Pont du Gard, which was built in the 1st century AD. Spanning across Gardon Valley, this spectacular aqueduct is one of the most amazing things you'll see around the region. When you've finished admiring it, head up the river to the Gorges du Gardon, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim.

Enjoy the beaches of the Petite Camargue

Can't imagine a holiday without the sea? Don't worry! Nîmes is just a few kilometres from the Mediterranean. Which beach will you choose: the family seaside resort of Gran du Roi, the glamorous marina of Port Camargue, or the more laid-back and natural Petite Camargue?

Let our campsites in the Nîmes region serve as the perfect base for your days at the beach. Travelling with the kids? Head to the resort town of Le Grau-du-Roi Port-Camargue. It's the last seaside settlement before you reach the protected area of the Camargue Nature Reserve. With all the facilities you need for a good time, this resort is great for the whole family. Head out into the marina for a fishing trip, or go for a horseback ride along the dunes. If you'd rather let the kids entertain themselves while you enjoy some special grown-up time, then it's time to head over to the campsite's kids' club.
