Set amid abandoned truffle fields and century-old oaks in the southern Drôme, the campsite is a haven of peace complete with heated swimming pool and large, shady pitches. Hiring a bike on site is a great way to explore the local Grignan countryside and its stunning lavender fields. The Enclave des Papes region is home to a number of lovely hilltop villages and chateaux including Adhémar-Montélimar, Suze-la-Rousse, La Garde-Adhémar, Vinsobres, Valréas and Nyons – all well worth a visit. In the words of 17C literary icon and letter writer Madame de Sévigné, the area offers really does offer a “unique panorama”.

A visit to the Château de Grignan, set on a rocky outcrop above the village. Built in the C11 and inhabited until the C17 by the famed Madame de Sévigné, today it enjoys listed status and houses a museum that retraces 1000 of history. Open all year.
Walking/cycling route
Enjoy a 2/3 hour stroll through the village of Grignan to the chateau, which offers magnificent views of Mont Ventoux, the Montagne de la Lance and the Dentelles de Montmirail. Continue with a tour of the Durance perfume factory, the Village Provençale Miniature, peopled with traditional nativity crib figures, and finally the Domaine de Montine winery. Alternatively, take a 4h bike ride along the cycle paths that criss-cross the Bois du Rouvergue in search of the bories or dry-stone huts scattered amongst the old truffle fields and juniper scrub.
Driving route
Spend a day in the charming village of Nyons, whose historic centre is home to a traditional Provencal market every Sunday morning from May to September. Visit the Bleu Provence distillery dedicated to lavender and other aromatic plants. This visitor centre guides you though the botany, cultivation, history and distillation of Provence’s famous aromatic plants. And don’t miss the Scourtinerie, the last factory producing scourtins de Provence, coir mats of every size and shape available in a range of typical Provencal colours.

The vineyards of Grignan-les-Adhémar sit amid a patchwork of lavender fields, olive groves and sweet-smelling thyme in the heart of the Rhône Valley. Les Truffières makes a great base for exploring the area and sampling its generous, easy-drinking AOC wines, nurtured by the Provencal climate.
