Well worth a visit Nearby Camping L'Abri-Côtier Nouvelle Aquitaine
The fortified citadel of Brouage, used for the production of salt in Richelieu’s time, now a favourite nesting place for storks. Take a stroll around the citadel on the walkway that tops the old walls.
Something different
Every Thursday in July and August, a horse-drawn carriage collects campers from the campsite and takes them on a guided tour of Fort Lupin, the smallest of France’s coastal defence fortifications.
Don’t miss
A 1¼ hour guided tour of the Hermione, an exact replica of Lafayette’s original 1779 Concord-class frigate, painstakingly constructed over 20 years, tells the story of Rochefort arsenal at the latter end of the 18C when great three-masted sailing ships still ruled the seas.
Walking/cycling route
Take a trip out to the Ile Madame, Charente Maritime’s smallest island, accessible when the waters recede at low tide via the Passe aux Boeufs causeway. The full 14km circuit takes you past the fort, the “shingle cross”, the Rebels’ Well” and a fish and seafood farm. Don’t come away without some salt from the local marshes and some of the island’s famed samphire.
Driving route
Make a tour of the famed Ring of Fire forts starting with the Ile Madame and Fort Lupin and its royal fountain, just a stone’s throw from the campsite. Then head towards Fouras and Fort Vauban, where you can climb up to the terrace and enjoy the 360° panoramic view, before continuing to the Pointe de la Fumée headland with its view of the Fort Boyard. At low tide you can even cross over to Fort Enet. Make one last stop at Fort Liédot to finish the tour before returning to the campsite.
