Well worth a visit Nearby Camping Omaha Beach Normandy
A visit to Arromanches, site of a temporary Mulberry harbour and the landing point for many Allied troops and boats during WW2. This quiet and peaceful little village is bordered by cliffs on either side and the remains of its wartime harbour are still visible today.
Something different
The American Cemetery and Memorial at Omaha Beach with its ranks of white, cross-shaped headstones, each inscribed with the name of a fallen soldier. An unforgettable experience in which emotion and admiration mix in equal parts (no entrance fee).
Don’t miss
Rising high above the English Channel, the Pointe du Hoc headland still bears traces of the bunkers that concealed the Wehrmacht’s heavy artillery during WW2. Today, this protected site has been re-conquered by the natural world and provides a lovely setting in which to walk and admire the surrounding scenery.
Walking/cycling route
A 10km walk from the campsite takes you to the beach at Vierville-sur-Mer, where the Allies landed their heavy artillery in WW2, to Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer and then to the beach at Colleville-sur-Mer, a small village dominated by its American Cemetery, before returning to the campsite via the beach.
Driving route
We recommend this 50km circuit starting in Vierville-sur-Mer. First stop: Port-en-Bessin, a pretty and unspoilt little fishing village with plenty of shops, it’s a great place to buy souvenirs and sample the locally caught fish and other local specialities. Next, head for the German WW2 artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer, set on a cliff top overlooking the Channel, and then Arromanches, where you’ll find the remains of an artificial Mulberry harbour before returning via Colleville-sur-Mer and a visit to the American Cemetery.
