Well worth a visit Nearby Camping Les Berges de la Dordogne Nouvelle Aquitaine
Explore the caves at the Grotte du Grand Roca veritable forest of stalactites, stalagmites and other mineral formations unparalleled in the area. Close by you’ll also find the prehistoric shelter at Laugerie Basse where a 3D projection and fun tablet-based virtual archaeological digs will help you to understand the site and give you an idea of what it looked like thousands of years ago in a 360° augmented reality experience. The two sites, just a few dozen yards apart, can be visited on a joint ticket.
Something different
The Château de Bridoire offers a unique range of traditional indoor and outdoor games for all ages, while its grounds contain a “wild” natural maze leading through a mysterious valley complete with river, springs, troglodytic shelters and picturesque ruins.
Don’t miss
Two of Périgord’s most impressive historic sites, Cadouin Abbey and the Château de Biron, lie close to the campsite and can be visited on a joint ticket. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the abbey’s cloisters are a masterpiece of flamboyant French Gothic architecture, while the impressive Château de Biron, much modified and extended over the centuries, bears testimony to the power once wielded by the Gontaut-Biron family.
Walking/cycling route
Leaving from the campsite, join the GR6 long-distance footpath on foot or by mountain bike and explore the meanders, river bluffs and stunning views of the Cingle de Trémolat. This 2-hour walk returns to the campsite via the main road leading to the village.
Driving route
Take a day’s drive around the bastide towns and pretty villages of southern Dordogne starting with Cadouin, where you can visit the abbey and its cloisters and admire the old covered market. Take a look at the unusual church at Molières, then continue to Saint-Avit-Sénieur, home to another – huge – abbey and the adjacent and excellent La Table de Léo restaurant, the perfect venue for lunch. In the afternoon, head out to the impressive bastide village of Monpazier with its numerous cafés, restaurants and craft shops. Round off the day at the Château de Biron, one of Périgord’s four baronial seats, which offers evening visits to coincide with the local night market, and craft workshops for all the family.
