Mont Aigoual Observatory

The expression "take a breath of fresh air" takes on a whole new meanning when you reach the top of Mont Aigoual! The meteorological observatory here was built between 1887 and 1894. From the summit, at a dizzying 1567 m, you can admire a magnificent 360° panorama on a clear day. There's also an exhibition which takes you behind the scenes into the world of meteorologists, and a museum that displays the old measuring instruments once used here, along with photos of the massif prior to its reforestation. This site is known for its extreme weather: the summit is one of the wettest places in France, it can experience gale force winds that can be as strong as 250 km/h, and in autumn and winter snow and fog are common. It is open from 1 May to the end of September from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Entry is free.

Cirque de Navacelles

From the top of the three Belvederes of Blandas, the site offers a panorama of one of the largest canyons in Europe, 300 m deep. The Cirque de Navacelles is incredible to behold, as is the contrast offered by the surrounding landscape. The climb to the plateau alone is enough to take your breath away as you gaze upon mighty rock formations and vast desert expanses. A dizzying treat for all visitors!

The Caves of the Demoiselles

Ideal for imaginative kids, access to the caves comes via a funicular that climbs to the entrance under the eyes of a prehistoric bear. The guided tour is a great family day out that will take you into huge chambers full of fascinating rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites, all highlighted by mood-enhancing lighting.

The Col des Mourèzes Trail

From Vigan, starting behind the town hall, take the cobbled path that climbs among the chestnut trees to the Col des Mourèzes. The ridge path, shaded by chestnut and oak trees, features terraces designed to preserve the earth on the sides of the mountain. As you descend, you'll see the bridge of the cross, as well as an aqueduct dating back to the middle of the 19th century, used to bring water from the mountain springs to the other side of the bank of the Arre. You'll also see the Pont du Gard, with its upper part designed to carry water and its lower part for vehicles and pedestrians. The hike takes 3.5 hours and is 10.5 km long. It is not particularly difficult. This trail forms part of the collection of 15 hikes known as "Discovery trails in Pays Viganais, Arre and Coudoulous valleys". As this trail passes by the Pont de la Croix, at the entrance to the campsite, you can also start right from the campsite.
