A visit to Lorient’s Cité de la Voile sailing museum promises three hours of interactive exhibits, adventure and discovery. A great half-day out whether you’re holidaying with your partner, family or friends, it offers the chance to immerse yourself in the world of sailing and the sea.
Something different
The Île de Groix. For a real change of scenery, take a boat out to the lovely Île de Groix, where you’ll find its population of 2300 every bit as friendly and welcoming as the landscape is picturesque. The paths that run along the coast and through the island’s lovely, flower-decked villages are ideal for leisurely walk or bike ride.
Don’t miss
The Etangs du Petit et du Grand Loc’h Nature Reserve covers a large area of freshwater marshland on the Morbihan coast. Once a sea inlet, the site is now divided into two clearly distinct but connected areas: the former polders of the Grand Loc’h and the Petit Loc’h lake. A reserve of regional significance, it covers almost 300 acres and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including the insects, reptiles and birds that inhabit its reed beds. To make the most of your visit and the site, take a guided tour or follow one of the signposted routes with their highly informative interpretive panels.
Walking/cycling route
A bike ride to the Île Keragan and the imposing 18C fortifications of Fort-Bloqué. This 10km route, car-free for most of its length, makes a great way to explore the lovely, local countryside and its architecture. Before heading back to the campsite, be sure to make a stop at the Fort-Bloqué biscuit factory where you can enjoy the local cakes, biscuits and other sweets.
Driving route
A trip out to Pont-Aven, one of Brittany’s most charming villages. Once home to numerous painters, including Gauguin, it now offers a range of restaurants where you can sample Brittany’s famed savoury pancakes or galettes bretonnes. Stop off at the well-known seaside resort of Concarneau, then head towards Quimper, Brittany’s cultural capital, not forgetting Lorient and its famous Celtic festival or the citadel of Port-Louis.
