Visit Roman Nîmes
Thanks to its 2,000 years of classical history, some people refer to the city of Nîmes as "French Rome". As you walk the streets, marvelling at the wonders of Arènes de Nîmes, Maison Carrée and Tour Magne, you'll feel like you've stepped back into the days of gladiators and emperors. There's more to this city than its ancient past, though. Check out all the great shops, fabulous restaurants and lively bars. As you walk through Nîmes, you'll be transported back in time...all the way back to the 2nd century BC, in fact. This was when Emperor Augustus built mighty monuments around this city, symbolising the power of Rome in Gaul. Many of these structures are still standing over two millennia later. Take a look at the Nîmes Amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the entire Roman world. There's also the Maison Carrée, which was the economic hub of the ancient city of Nemausus.
