Well worth a visit Nearby Camping La Châtaigneraie de Sarlat Nouvelle Aquitaine

Explore the Dordogne valley by boat. Take a unique trip along the River Dordogne aboard a real 18C gabarre, one of the flat-bottomed boats traditionally used on the river, from the lovely village of La Roque Gageac to the bridge at Castelnaud (13C castle), and learn the history of the river and its châteaux as you go.

Something different

Gorodka – Explore the unique world of artist Pierre Shasmoukine, an outdoor exhibition of works made of neon lights and recycled materials set deep in the woods. A magical and truly original place best visited at dusk.

Don’t miss

Sarlat – Just 9km from the campsite, this beautifully preserved medieval town offers a range of upmarket restaurants and a maze of narrow streets as lively by night as they are by day. The Dordogne valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – contains an exceptional range of heritage sites including the châteaux of Monfort, Castelnaud, Les Milandes and Beynac, the medieval “new towns” or bastides of Domme and Montpazier and the prehistoric caves and shelters at Les Eyzies, Lascaux II and Le Cap Blanc.

Walking/cycling route

A trip to the gardens at the Manoir d'Eyrignac (14km round trip + visit). This lovely rural walk takes you along dirt tracks and tarmac roads through the green and gently undulating Périgord countryside. Sample some local duck and goose products with a 1km walk followed by a farm visit and tasting (2 hours).

Driving route

The Dordogne valley from the campsite. Head towards Vitrac and admire the lovely view of the Cingle de Monfort meander, then the medieval town of Domme with its esplanade, views of the Dordogne valley and caves, and finally La Roque Gageac, a truly picturesque village perched on the top of the cliffs overlooking the River Dordogne, and on towards the Château de Castelnaud with its Museum of Medieval Warfare). (Here you can make a detour across the river to explore the Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac. The route then takes you back to the village and château at Beynac.
